*takes deep breath*
Okay, so where do I even begin…Anaiya is officially ONE! How in the heck did that happen so fast? I know it’s a cliche to say that and trust me, I want to pinch everyone that mentions it EVERY TIME they ask “if she is my first one”. It’s sadly so true, where did my itty bitty little baby go? She now runs around (started taking steps at 9 1/2 months…I know) and wants to explore everything around her. I love how curious and extremely talkative she is. It really does amaze me. Anaiya can say up to 10 words and can sign to me what she wants and when she is all done eating. I am really blessed to have such a happy, smart, and charismatic little girl. I am so honored to be her mother. *tears* Ok, ok back to her birthday celebration before I start to get emotional. Princess Anaiya’s Royal Ball. What better invites than to have that of an actual scroll. I loved the idea and so did my friends. I mean, you can’t get more royal than that! Of course her theme came from…*drum roll* Princess theme! Obviously, she is and will always be our little Princess.
So, I never knew how much fun I would have planning and designing everythig for her first Birthday/Korean “Dol”! I even decided to make this a two post continuation so you can see what I did with her month to month pictures and display table. My next post is going to go more in depth of how I made certain things and how you too can also plan or DIY a party like this.
Let me just start with Princess Anaiya’s grand entrance. I mean what better way to come into your party than a carriage and mini unicorn/ pony. OH MY GOSH, if there was one highlight it was definitely this moment. I’m starting to tear up just thinking about it, she was a little shocked at first about being put in the carriage but as Dean and I were right by her side, she just sat there calm the whole way down the isle. The part that got to me the most was when I took her out of the carriage to walk the rest of the way. It was at that very moment when I realized how lucky I am. She not only stopped to look at everyone in shock but immediately started to clap and wave hi to everyone as they started to cheer her on. She walked over to all the familiar faces and kept on clapping, smiling, and laughing. It was perfect. I was so happy that my vision of this moment blew my expectations out of the water. *eyes starting to water*
Also, I just posted Anaiya’s 100 day celebration HERE, but it was just a little bit LESS stressful than this was. I posted it so that you may have a better understanding of the traditional Korean cultures that are celebrated for a child. I also loved this celebration even more because of fact that we so rarely get to see our close friends and family. Your baby’s birthday is the only way to get everyone together. Nonetheless in the Korean culture, traditionally, they celebrate both the 100-day mark along with the 1-year milestone. The 1 year celebration is called ‘Dol,” and it’s a ceremony that blesses the baby with a prosperous future and still takes on a great significance in Korea today. My grandma in-law (aka Anaiya’s great-grandma) that visited Korea, while we were pregnant with her, sent us a traditional Korean costume (hanbok) for Anaiya to wear on this big day. It was the cutest thing I’ve ever seen! I also have a photo of her Dad on his 1-year celebration wearing a traditional Korean costume. It takes on such great meaning for us to continue this tradition for our family.
Doljabi is played as a traditional Korean fortune telling game. Basically you place items in front of your child such as money, ball, stethoscope , and etc. Whichever he/she picks will be the destiny of his/her future. We did it the American-Korean way and picked some items that her dad and I wanted to add. Money (success), piano (musician), microphone (entertainer), stethoscope (doctor or in medical field), computer mouse (technology, which her dad chose), and I added in a little volleyball (athlete) of mine for fun! We had our guests vote in a jar of what they thought she would pick and it seemed as if majority of people thought that she would pick the Volleyball! But low and behold… she ended up picking the microphone! Her Grandparents and Great grandma were so excited because to them it signified that she will be well loved and talented! I honestly think that a microphone could also mean that she will be a “Super Star”! (Mary Katherine Gallagher would be proud) haha These are obviously just fun little games that are not to be taken literally. In all honesty, Anaiya can be whoever she wants to be, all I can hope for is that she will be kind & compassionate to those around her.
We were so nervous that Anaiya might get fussy or grumpy after an hour or two, but we’ve never seen her happier. She was in the BEST mood I’ve ever seen her. She was totally socializing with all the babies/ kids and was just making everyone smile & laugh with her dance moves. It was honestly the most perfect day I could ask for. It sounds so cliché & cheesy, but seeing Anaiya happy makes my world go-round. Having Anaiya in our lives for the past year has given us a new purpose & meaning. She really is the best thing that ever happened to us.
Celebrating a baby’s first birthday has far more meaning than just a birthday. Not only is it a celebration of us parents – the fact that we survived our first year of parenthood, but also a celebration of our community. Our friends and family who so willingly helped us along the way. Whether it was Deans mom and dad coming over to help us with her and watch her for a couple hours so I can catch up on sleep, or our dear friends sharing their own experiences so we didn’t feel alone. It seriously takes a village and a community to get through the first year. So although this party was to celebrate Anaiya, it was equally a day to celebrate our community. And YOU guys are now a part of this community as well. I really hope you enjoyed this as much as I love to share!
To Anaiya: This year has been the best year of my life because of you and your daddy. You have not only changed my concept of living but you opened my eyes up to a whole new world of love. Love that I never new existed till the day I lifted you in my arms. You are so beautiful, funny and smart beyond belief. You have taught me patience, kindness and an over all better outlook on life itself. Who knew someone so little can make sure a huge impact on our lives. I will say this forever, THANK YOU for choosing me to be your mommy. I love you with all my heart.
